Kony 2012

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 – When I opened my facebook all I saw was everyone sharing this video – Kony 2012. This morning I remember hearing that this video was going viral. So I decided to check it out because like many people out there I knew nothing about Kony.

Kony 2012 was produced by Invisible Children and their blurb on their vimeo page says:

KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

Joseph Kony is the number one sought after war criminal – that makes him a very bad person (like Gavin says in the video). Kony 2012 is a very powerful video and well made. It is narrated by Jason Russell, the film maker, and from this video you learn that this has been a project that he has been working on for over 10 years.

#Kony2012 and #stopkony have been trending all day on twitter. As usual when something becomes this popular there is always some controversy that will surround it.  There are many critics out there turning this video into a controversy. Here is some stuff that the critics are saying about this movie:

  1. Less than 50% of Invisible Children’s revenue goes towards the campaign. The majority of the money goes to advertising campaigns, salaries, film production costs and travel expenses.
  2. Making Kony famous may be sending out the wrong message – he is a very bad man who should be taken down for all the criminal acts against humanity that he has done.
  3. Invisible Children are fighting for military action to be used to take down Kony.  They support the Ugandan army, which has been known to rape, plunder and kill innocent by standers.

Where people are getting this information is from a tumblr page called “Visible Children”. In return Invisible Children has published their own response to that page.

Watch this movie, do your own research and come up with your own conclusions. One thing for sure Kony is a war criminal that definitely should be arrested for all the atrocities he has committed.
