Monday, March 5, 2012 – Last night the Space channel had the movie “Blindness” on. I remember seeing previews for it and was not particularly interested in that movie. The reviews were all over the place – some liked it, some didn’t.
I decided to give it a shot, I wanted to turn it off a few times but was curious as to how the movie would end. All I can say is what a bizarre movie! It all starts with a Japanese man going blind and then other people around him start to go blind. The government quarantines these people because they don’t know what is causing it. An ophthalmologist (Mark Ruffalo), who treated the Japanese man, goes blind but not his wife (Julianne Moore). She decides to stay with him when he is sent into quarantine and pretends to be blind. More and more people show up and chaos ensues. There is fighting for food, women are raped (one of them is beaten to death). During all of this you see clips on the TV by some official but no one talks about why these people went blind or if they are working on a cure. Why is the wife the only one who didn’t go blind?
The ending is so bizarre – the Japanese guy gets his vision back just like that… but with the world in chaos, what will happen once everyone gets their visions back – they will have to rebuild…
So glad that I didn’t go see this movie in the theater. If anyone has seen this movie I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
