Pancake Tuesday

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 – Today a whole bunch of us went out for lunch to celebrate Pancake Tuesday.  It is also know as Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday… It is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of lent.

I have always known this day as Mardi Gras and not Pancake Tuesday.  So I was curious to know why some people call it Pancake Tuesday.  In the olden days people saw eggs, butter and dairy products as rich food, all of which are ingredients to make pancakes. They would consume these foods because during lent they would usually give up meat, dairy and eggs.

One funny explanation was to let people eat as many pancakes as they wanted to fatten them up for lent.

One of the items on my bucket list is to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.
