Saturday, January 28, 2012 – Over the Christmas break, Space had a two day “Merlin” marathon. I had never seen this show but have always found the King Arthur legends interesting. So while cleaning and unpacking I watched some of the episodes and got hooked. I wanted to learn more about Merlin, Arthur, Morgana and Guinevere. There was something about King Uther, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Finally I had my aha moment when I googled the actor’s name – Anthony Head, he played Rupert on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Yesterday I got to see how it all began thanks to youtube. So now I know how Merlin became Arthur’s manservant! Here is a quick synopsis of that episode:
(from IMDb) Young Merlin is sent by his mother from their village to start a better life in Camelot, where he is apprenticed to Gaius, the physician to the repressive King Uther, who believes magic is evil and punishable by death. When Gaius realizes that Merlin has magical, telekinetic powers he agrees to keep the boy’s secret. Uther has just executed a sorcerer, whose mother comes to Camelot in the guise of a pretty girl who charms the court to sleep with her singing. Only Merlin sees what is happening and stays awake, saving the situation without being exposed as a warlock. As a reward he is promoted to valet to Uther’s son, Arthur.
